The initial evangelistic efforts of the Vienna Team will center around, and operate through, cell-based evangelism. A cell is a group of people (approximately 6-12) coming together to study the bible and approach God in prayer. Initially these cell groups will be for the explicit purpose of evangelism, but as people accept Jesus as their savior the cell groups will also serve as a time of worship. As often as once every Sunday, all of the cells will join together in a celebration during which Christians will engage in corporate worship and encourage each other in their faith journey.
Cell-based evangelism offers people the opportunity to ask questions about God, Jesus and Christianity, and engage in studies of these, in a non-threatening environment. The people of Europe generally hold a postmodern worldview that is inherently skeptical towards religious institutions, thus walking into a home of 6 or so people to study the bible is much less intimidating than walking into a cathedral, or similar-type building, to hear and watch liturgy.
Our goal is to begin with two cells groups, each lead by two families of our team, and when the number of people exceeds that which can be easily accommodated in a home, the two cells will divide into four cells. Each of these four cells will be lead by a family from our team. From this point, each team member will identify an Austrian Christian capable of leading a cell group and ask this person to co-lead the group so that when it is large enough to divide, the new group will be lead by a native Austrian.
